Google Timeline is gone from the web. Your travel history doesn't have to be.

Google moved Maps Timeline to on-device storage and retired the web view. If you exported your data — or want to rebuild your history from photos — these free tools pick up where Timeline left off. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Step 1 — Export your Timeline.json

  1. On your phone, open Google Maps → profile picture → Your Timeline.
  2. Go to Settings → Location & privacy → Export Timeline data.
  3. You get a Timeline.json file with every visit and path Google kept on the device.

Step 2 — See what it contains

Timeline.json Reader (free)

Drop the file in and get a world map of the countries you've visited, with first and last visit dates. Old Google Takeout Records.json files work too. 100% in-browser — you can switch off Wi-Fi first if you like.

Step 3 — Fill the gaps with your photos

Photo country counter (free)

Timeline only knows the years you used Google Maps. Your photo library remembers the rest: this tool reads the GPS coordinates stored in your photos and rebuilds trips from years before any app was installed — again, entirely on your device.

Count countries from photos

Step 4 — Keep it recording by itself

The reason Timeline mattered was that it worked in the background. Driftlog does the same job as a private, on-device travel log: it records the countries and cities you pass through with no check-ins — no account, no server, no ads, no subscription. Free to download with a one-time unlock.
